TIRANA, Albania: Anger is sweeping across Albania as thousands of citizens, environmental activists, and opposition supporters rally against a proposed luxury resort project planned along the country's untouched Adriatic coastline. Protesters claim the development threatens fragile ecosystems and could permanently alter one of Albania’s most treasured natural regions.
Demonstrators took to the streets carrying banners and environmental symbols, accusing authorities of prioritizing elite tourism projects over environmental protection. Activists warn that large-scale construction in the coastal zone could damage wildlife habitats, coastal landscapes, and biodiversity that have remained largely untouched for decades.
The controversy has quickly evolved into a national political issue, with critics demanding greater transparency in the approval process and stronger safeguards for protected areas. Environmental groups argue that economic development should not come at the cost of irreversible ecological damage.
Government officials, however, maintain that the project will bring investment, jobs, and international tourism opportunities. As protests intensify, the battle between development ambitions and environmental preservation is emerging as one of Albania's most contentious public disputes in recent years.
