Washington, June 28:
US Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem has urged migrants living in the United States under temporary legal protections to either secure permanent residency through available legal pathways or prepare to leave the country once their temporary status expires.
The remarks come as the administration continues to tighten immigration enforcement and review several humanitarian protection programmes. Noem said temporary immigration benefits are not intended to provide indefinite residence and encouraged eligible migrants to pursue permanent legal status if they wish to remain in the US.
Her comments are expected to affect thousands of migrants currently covered under temporary immigration programmes, including humanitarian and work-related protections. Immigration advocates have expressed concern that many individuals may have limited options to transition to permanent residency.
