Jammu, July 2: The 57-day Amarnath Yatra began on Thursday with Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha flagging off the first batch of pilgrims from the Bhagwati Nagar base camp in Jammu.
Thousands of devotees embarked on the annual pilgrimage to the holy Amarnath cave shrine amid elaborate security arrangements. Authorities have deployed a multi-layered security network, including police, paramilitary forces, surveillance systems and escorted convoys, to ensure the safety of pilgrims throughout the Yatra.
Pilgrims will travel to the shrine through the traditional Pahalgam route and the shorter Baltal route. The pilgrimage will continue for 57 days, with authorities also putting in place medical, transport, accommodation and sanitation facilities for devotees.
Addressing the pilgrims, LG Manoj Sinha extended his best wishes for a safe and peaceful pilgrimage, assuring that all necessary arrangements have been made for the smooth conduct of the Yatra.
