Hyderabad/Khammam:
Speculation over the long-pending delimitation exercise has once again gained momentum after Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy hinted at a possible increase in the state's parliamentary and assembly constituencies
. Speaking at a public meeting in Khammam on Friday, the Chief Minister reportedly indicated that Telangana's Lok Sabha seats could rise from the current 17 to 26 following the delimitation process. He also suggested that the number of Assembly constituencies could witness a significant increase from the present strength of 119 seats.
Political observers believe the remarks were not incidental but a signal that the Centre may move ahead with the delimitation exercise after the next round of political and parliamentary consultations.
The issue has gained renewed attention amid changing political equations across the country. Analysts point to shifting alliances and changes in parliamentary strength following recent elections in states such as West Bengal, Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu, which they believe could influence the Centre's ability to push major legislative reforms.
The proposed delimitation exercise, which involves redrawing constituency boundaries and reallocating seats based on population figures, has been a politically sensitive issue, particularly for southern states that have expressed concerns over representation and demographic balance.
The implementation of delimitation is also closely linked to the Women's Reservation Bill, officially known as the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam. The legislation provides for 33 percent reservation for women in the Lok Sabha and State Assemblies and is expected to come into effect after the completion of the census and delimitation process.
With discussions gaining momentum in political circles, Telangana leaders are increasingly preparing party cadres for a possible expansion in parliamentary and assembly representation in the coming years.
While there has been no official announcement from the Centre regarding the timeline for delimitation, recent political developments have reignited the debate over one of India's most significant electoral reforms.
