Washington | August 7, 2026: President Donald Trump’s administration has suffered a major legal blow after a U.S. federal appeals court ordered a temporary halt to construction of the proposed $400 million White House ballroom. The decision puts the high-profile project on hold while the broader legal dispute continues.
The ballroom is planned on the site of the former East Wing, which was demolished to make way for the new structure. The project has attracted intense attention because of its scale, cost and the administration’s plans to significantly alter part of the White House complex.
The legal challenge focuses largely on whether the president has the authority to proceed with such a major construction project without additional approval from Congress. Opponents have also raised concerns about the preservation of the historic White House grounds.
The Trump administration has defended the ballroom plan, saying the facility would provide a larger venue for official events and address space and security requirements. The court’s latest order, however, means construction cannot proceed while the legal fight over the project moves forward.
The ruling could set up another major confrontation over presidential authority and control of federal property. The administration may seek further legal relief, potentially taking the dispute to the Supreme Court, as Trump faces pressure to defend one of his most ambitious White House renovation projects.
