BOGOTÁ, August 11, 2026:
A devastating earthquake has plunged western Colombia into a massive rescue operation, with emergency crews digging through collapsed buildings in a desperate search for survivors. Local authorities estimate that more than 200 people have lost their lives, while the full scale of the disaster is still emerging.
The powerful 7.4-magnitude quake caused widespread destruction across several parts of western Colombia. Homes, apartment buildings, schools and hospitals were damaged or reduced to rubble, leaving thousands of residents displaced and many others unaccounted for.
Rescue teams have been working under extremely difficult conditions, using heavy machinery as well as their hands to clear huge slabs of concrete and debris. In some of the worst-hit areas, relatives and volunteers have joined emergency workers in the urgent effort to locate people who may still be trapped beneath the ruins
. The disaster has also disrupted essential services and transportation. Several airports were shut, while electricity, water and communications were affected in quake-hit areas. Thousands of people have been forced to remain outside their homes amid fears of further tremors and unsafe structures.
With rescue operations continuing, authorities warn that the casualty figures could change as teams reach areas that remain difficult to access. The immediate priority is to pull survivors from the rubble, provide emergency medical care and shelter displaced families as Colombia confronts one of its most serious earthquake disasters in recent years.
