Rampurhat, West Bengal | August 16, 2026
West Bengal political circles were rocked on Sunday after veteran Trinamool Congress leader and former Assembly Deputy Speaker Asish Banerjee was found hanging inside a TMC party office in Rampurhat, Birbhum district. Police sources said the incident came to light on Sunday morning at the party office near his residence in Hattala Para.
A purported suicide note was reportedly recovered from the party office. Police have taken the note into custody and are examining its contents as part of the investigation. Banerjee's body has been sent for post-mortem examination, and officials are working to establish the exact circumstances surrounding his death.
Banerjee was a five-time MLA from Rampurhat, representing the constituency for 25 years from 2001 to 2026. He served as Deputy Speaker of the West Bengal Assembly and also held ministerial responsibilities in the Mamata Banerjee-led government, including the Agriculture portfolio.
His political career included several important responsibilities in the state government. He served as a minister at different times and later became Deputy Speaker of the Assembly. He remained a prominent TMC figure in Birbhum politics for years before losing the Rampurhat seat in the 2026 Assembly election.
The circumstances surrounding the death have triggered shock and questions in West Bengal's political circles. However, investigators have not yet announced a definitive cause of death, and the contents and authenticity of the purported note will form part of the ongoing probe. The post-mortem report and police investigation are expected to provide further clarity.
