: Passing gas is a normal biological process, and new research suggests most people do it several times a day. Scientists say flatulence is a natural part of digestion and, in most cases, a sign that the digestive system is working properly.
According to the study, the average person passes gas around five times a day, while the majority experience it between two and seven times daily. Researchers found that adults between 26 and 45 years of age tend to pass gas more frequently than other age groups.
The study also noted that gas is more common after meals, particularly in the evening, as bacteria in the intestines break down food and produce gases. Foods rich in fiber, beans, dairy products for lactose-intolerant individuals, and carbonated drinks can increase gas production.
Health experts say occasional flatulence is completely normal and usually does not require medical attention. However, frequent gas accompanied by severe abdominal pain, persistent bloating, diarrhea, constipation, or unexplained weight loss may indicate an underlying digestive disorder and should be evaluated by a healthcare professional.
