Hyderabad | August 7, 2026:
How quickly food is digested can vary significantly depending on the type of food, portion size and an individual's digestive system. A widely circulated chart has drawn attention by listing estimated digestion times for several commonly consumed foods, from fruits and vegetables to meat, dairy and fast food.
According to the chart, watermelon is listed at around 20 minutes, while oranges and cucumber are shown at approximately 30 minutes. Bananas and broccoli are listed at around 45 minutes. The chart also places eggs at about 45 minutes and fish at 45–60 minutes
For staple foods, the chart estimates that rice may take 1.5–2 hours, while bread, milk and boiled potatoes are listed at around two hours. Chicken and nuts are shown at approximately three hours, while beef is estimated at 3–4 hours.
The chart suggests that some high-fat or heavier foods may take longer to digest. Pizza is listed at 4–6 hours, while cheese is shown at 3–5 hours. These figures, however, should not be considered exact medical measurements because digestion is influenced by factors such as cooking method, meal composition, quantity, fibre, fat content and individual metabolism.
Experts generally caution against treating viral digestion charts as precise timetables. Food digestion involves several stages, and the time food spends in the stomach and intestines varies from person to person.
The chart can be viewed as a general comparison rather than a scientifically fixed schedule, and people experiencing persistent digestive problems should seek medical advice.
