Tamil Nadu politics has taken a sensational turn after explosive claims emerged that DMK president and former Chief Minister M. K. Stalin allegedly proposed supporting arch-rival Edappadi K. Palaniswami and the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam to prevent actor-turned-politician Vijay from capturing power in the state.
The political drama unfolded after Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam reportedly emerged as the single largest party in the election results, sending shockwaves through Tamil Nadu’s traditional Dravidian political establishment. With TVK’s rapid rise, both the DMK and AIADMK are facing an unprecedented challenge to their decades-long dominance.
According to senior Left leaders, Stalin held urgent consultations with alliance partners after the results. During these talks, he is said to have argued that allowing Vijay to form the government would be politically disastrous for all Dravidian parties. To stop that outcome, Stalin allegedly suggested extending outside support to AIADMK and installing Palaniswami as Chief Minister.
The proposal stunned allies. Leaders from the Indian National Congress and Communist parties reportedly rejected the idea outright, questioning how parties aligned under the INDIA bloc could back an AIADMK that remains associated with the BJP-led alliance
Congress leaders are said to have told Stalin that supporting AIADMK would amount to indirectly helping the Bharatiya Janata Party. They warned that such a move would be politically indefensible and ideologically unacceptable, leading them to sever their long-standing ties with the DMK without hesitation.
The Communist Party of India (Marxist) also criticized the DMK’s stance. Tamil Nadu CPM leaders reportedly stated that backing Vijay’s TVK was far more acceptable than supporting AIADMK. They made it clear that any arrangement involving AIADMK was out of the question.
CPM state secretary Bobby alleged that Congress did not betray the DMK; instead, it recognized Stalin’s strategy and exited before being drawn into what he described as a political misadventure. He said Left parties would never support AIADMK as long as it remains aligned with the BJP.
The controversy has exposed deep cracks within the DMK-led alliance and raised serious questions about Stalin’s post-election strategy. As Vijay’s political rise gathers momentum, Tamil Nadu appears headed toward a dramatic realignment that could reshape the state’s power structure for years to come.
