New Delhi: Allegations of irregularities in the Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Project have once again surfaced at the national level, following a question raised in Parliament by Congress MP Anil Kumar Yadav. Responding to the query, Union Jal Shakti Minister C. R. Patil addressed concerns related to the implementation and financial aspects of the ambitious irrigation project in Telangana. The minister stated that issues pertaining to large-scale irrigation projects, including execution, cost escalation, and adherence to norms, fall primarily under the jurisdiction of the respective state governments. However, he noted that the Centre remains vigilant and may seek clarifications or reports if any discrepancies are formally brought to its notice. The Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Project, one of the world’s largest multi-stage lift irrigation schemes, has been under scrutiny over alleged cost overruns and procedural lapses. Opposition leaders have repeatedly demanded transparency and accountability in the project’s execution. Political reactions intensified after the Parliament discussion, with Congress leaders alleging large-scale corruption and calling for an independent probe. Meanwhile, leaders from the ruling side in Telangana have defended the project, stating that it has significantly boosted irrigation capacity and supported farmers across the state. The issue is expected to trigger further debate both in Parliament and within Telangana’s political landscape in the coming days.
