SULTANPUR, UTTAR PRADESH: In a major legal relief for Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, an MP/MLA court in Uttar Pradesh’s Sultanpur district on Monday acquitted him in a defamation case linked to his alleged remarks against then BJP president Amit Shah in 2018.
Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Shubham Verma pronounced the verdict in Rahul Gandhi’s presence in court, bringing relief to the Congress leader in a case that had remained pending for several years.
The complaint was filed in 2018 by BJP leader Vijay Mishra, who accused Gandhi of making allegedly defamatory remarks about Amit Shah during a press conference in Bengaluru. Gandhi had reportedly referred to Shah as a “murder accused,” triggering the legal battle.
Rahul Gandhi denied the allegations and argued that his remarks had been taken out of context. The complainant, however, maintained that the comments were objectionable and damaged Shah’s reputation.
The acquittal marks a significant development in the long-running legal dispute involving the Congress leader and the BJP. The verdict is likely to trigger fresh political reactions as the Congress and the BJP continue their war of words.
