Johannesburg: Ghana has launched a special evacuation operation for its citizens living in South Africa following rising tensions linked to anti-immigration protests across parts of the country.
A chartered flight carrying Ghanaian nationals departed from Johannesburg as authorities responded to growing safety concerns among migrant communities. Officials said hundreds of people have already registered to return home voluntarily.
The protests, driven by anger over undocumented immigration and economic pressures, have triggered fear among several foreign communities living in South Africa. Some migrants reportedly faced threats, intimidation and uncertainty during demonstrations.
Ghana’s government said the repatriation effort is aimed at protecting citizens who wish to leave temporarily until the situation stabilizes. Additional evacuation flights are expected over the next few days as more registrations continue.
Diplomatic officials are also coordinating assistance for returning citizens, including temporary support and reintegration measures after arrival in Ghana.
South African authorities have appealed for calm and warned against targeting foreign nationals, while several African governments continue to closely monitor developments on the ground.
