WASHINGTON, August 16, 2026: U.S.
President Donald Trump has renewed his aggressive push to end America’s twice-yearly clock changes, calling on the Senate to swiftly pass legislation that would make Daylight Saving Time permanent across much of the country.
Trump urged senators to approve what he called the “NO MORE CHANGING THE CLOCKS ACT”, arguing that repeatedly moving clocks forward and backward creates unnecessary “disruption and chaos.” He also said that keeping more sunlight in the evening would be beneficial, including for public safety.
The House of Representatives has already passed legislation aimed at making Daylight Saving Time permanent. The measure cleared the House by a 308-117 vote in July and has now moved to the Senate, where its future remains uncertain.
Trump has strongly promoted the idea of keeping clocks permanently on daylight-saving time, saying Americans are tired of changing clocks twice every year. Supporters argue that longer evening daylight could benefit outdoor activities, retail, tourism and restaurants, while potentially improving public safety.
However, the proposal also faces opposition. Critics warn that permanent Daylight Saving Time could mean much darker winter mornings, potentially forcing children to travel to school before sunrise in parts of the country. Some lawmakers have therefore questioned whether permanent daylight time or permanent standard time would be the better option.
The issue now moves to the Senate, where Trump is demanding quick action. If Congress ultimately approves the measure and it is signed into law, Americans in participating states would no longer have to reset their clocks every spring and fall—bringing an end to a decades-old twice-yearly ritual.
