TEHRAN, July 5:
Three sons of Iran's slain former Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei attended his state funeral in Tehran on Sunday, while his successor, Mojtaba Khamenei, did not appear at the public ceremony.
Thousands of mourners gathered in the Iranian capital to pay their final respects to Khamenei, with senior government officials, military commanders and religious leaders joining the funeral procession. State media showed Khamenei's sons participating in prayers and funeral rites alongside other members of the family.
The absence of Mojtaba Khamenei, who assumed the country's highest leadership position after his father's death, drew attention as Iran continues to face heightened regional tensions and security concerns. Iranian authorities did not provide an official explanation for his absence.
The funeral marks the beginning of a series of national mourning events following the death of one of Iran's most influential political and religious figures. Authorities have emphasized national unity as the country navigates a sensitive leadership transition.
Iran remains under intense international scrutiny amid ongoing regional tensions and diplomatic challenges, with the leadership transition unfolding against a backdrop of heightened security across the country.
