Denmark has firmly pushed back against renewed comments from U.S. President Donald Trump suggesting the United States should take control of Greenland.
Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said Denmark expects its allies to respect the country's sovereignty and made it clear that Greenland is not for sale. She emphasized that the island's future will be determined only by the people of Greenland.
Trump has continued to argue that Greenland holds major strategic value because of its location in the Arctic and its importance to regional security. His remarks have once again sparked diplomatic disagreement between Washington and Copenhagen.
Greenland is a self-governing territory within the Kingdom of Denmark, managing most of its domestic affairs while Denmark oversees foreign policy and defense. Greenlandic leaders have repeatedly rejected any proposal to sell the island, insisting that its political future belongs to its residents.
The latest dispute highlights the Arctic's growing geopolitical importance as global powers compete over security, trade routes and natural resources in the region.
