Protect Your Eyes This Summer: Sunglasses Are a Must

Summer glare can be brutal, and squinting all day isn’t just uncomfortable—it can harm your eyes. Experts say wearing sunglasses of the right size is key: too small, and UV rays

Health/Life style

As summer temperatures rise, sunglasses have become an essential accessory—not just for style, but for health. Eye specialists warn that prolonged exposure to ultraviolet (UV) rays can cause serious damage, including cataracts, macular degeneration, and chronic eye strain. “Sunglasses protect your eyes from harmful UV rays, reduce glare, and improve visual comfort,” says Dr. Meera Singh, an ophthalmologist in New Delhi. “Choosing the right size and lens quality is important. A well-fitting pair shields your eyes completely and prevents long-term damage.” Beyond health, sunglasses also enhance comfort during outdoor activities like driving, cycling, or walking under the scorching sun. Polarized lenses are particularly recommended as they cut glare from reflective surfaces such as roads and water. Experts advise investing in sunglasses that block 99–100% of UVA and UVB rays and ensuring the frames cover the eyes adequately. “It’s not about brand or price—it’s about protection,” adds Dr. Singh. With summer just around the corner, opt for a pair that fits well and meets safety standards. Your eyes will thank you..
