Bangladesh Signals Reset in Ties with India Under BNP Leadership

Bangladesh assures India of improving ties under Tarique Rahman-led BNP government despite concerns over Sheikh Hasina’s presence in India.

India

New Delhi, April 8:

Bangladesh has conveyed to India its willingness to stabilise and improve bilateral relations under the leadership of Tarique Rahman and the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP).

The assurance comes despite ongoing sensitivities, including the continued presence of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in India following her removal from power.

Officials from the Ministry of External Affairs, Government of India confirmed that Dhaka has reiterated its commitment to maintaining constructive engagement with New Delhi. The message was conveyed during recent diplomatic exchanges involving senior representatives from both countries.

India’s External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar is understood to have acknowledged Bangladesh’s position while emphasising the importance of mutual respect, regional stability, and continued cooperation in key sectors such as trade, connectivity, and security.

On its part, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Bangladesh indicated that while certain “irritants” remain, both sides are keen to prevent these issues from derailing broader bilateral ties. Among these concerns is the political dimension surrounding Hasina’s stay in India, which continues to be a point of discussion in diplomatic circles.

Bangladesh’s outreach reflects a pragmatic approach by the BNP-led establishment to recalibrate foreign policy priorities and ensure regional stability. Analysts believe that improved India-Bangladesh relations are critical for economic cooperation, border management, and counter-terrorism efforts in South Asia.

While challenges persist, both nations appear committed to dialogue and gradual normalisation, signalling a cautious but positive trajectory for future engagement.
