Kolkata, April 19

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Saturday launched a sharp attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Centre, alleging that the BJP’s “failed conspiracy” over the Women’s Reservation issue has exposed its true intentions. In a post on X, Banerjee claimed that the BJP’s political decline had begun in Parliament and would continue in West Bengal.

Criticising the Centre’s approach, the All India Trinamool Congress chief said the attempt to link women’s reservation with delimitation was a “deliberate political strategy” that ultimately backfired. She accused the Bharatiya Janata Party of using the issue for electoral gains rather than genuine empowerment of wome

Banerjee asserted that her party has consistently championed women’s representation in politics. She highlighted that the Trinamool Congress has one of the highest proportions of elected women representatives in both Parliament and state assemblies, reinforcing its commitment to gender equality in governance.

Questioning the BJP’s narrative, Banerjee asked why her party would oppose women’s reservation if it has always supported greater inclusion. She clarified that the opposition stemmed solely from the Centre’s decision to tie the reservation to delimitation, which she said could delay its implementation and dilute its purpose.

The remarks come amid an intensifying political battle between the Centre and opposition parties over the structure and rollout of the Women’s Reservation Bill, with debates continuing inside and outside the Parliament of India.
