A massive fire at a key facility of Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) has triggered serious safety concerns, with early reports pointing to a critical leak as the cause of the incident.

The blaze, which erupted inside the refinery complex, sent thick plumes of smoke into the sky and forced an immediate shutdown of operations, raising alarm across the energy sector. Sources indicate that the fire originated from a suspected pipeline or processing unit leak, exposing potential lapses in maintenance and safety protocols.

Emergency teams rushed to contain the flames, and while no major casualties have been officially confirmed so far, the incident has put refinery workers and nearby areas on high alert. Authorities are now racing to assess the extent of the damage. In a significant setback, the much-anticipated inauguration of the upgraded facility by Narendra Modi has been postponed.

The refinery, which was expected to boost fuel output and strengthen regional energy supply, will now resume operations only by late May, according to preliminary estimates.

The government has ordered a high-level inquiry into the incident, with officials vowing strict action if negligence is found. The fire has once again raised tough questions about industrial safety standards in critical infrastructure, even as HPCL faces mounting pressure to restore operations and public confidence swiftly.
