Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra has come out in support of Samajwadi Party MP Iqra Hasan after Uttar Pradesh Police allegedly detained her while she was seeking justice for the family of a deceased youth in Shamli district.
Iqra Hasan had visited senior police officials after tensions escalated over the death of a young man, with local residents demanding a fair investigation. Videos shared on social media showed the MP objecting as police personnel escorted her away, prompting criticism from opposition leaders.
Reacting to the development, Mahua Moitra said that detaining an elected representative for standing with a victim’s family sends a troubling message. She described the move as an attempt to intimidate those who question authority and seek accountability.
Moitra said opposition leaders would continue to raise their voices whenever citizens face injustice. She stressed that public representatives have a responsibility to support grieving families and ensure that their concerns are heard by the administration.
The incident has sparked fresh political debate, with opposition parties accusing the Uttar Pradesh government of suppressing dissent and demanding a transparent inquiry into both the youth’s death and the police action involving Iqra Hasan.
