TMC MP Kalyan Banerjee Injured During Protest Outside Chanditala Police Station
Senior Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Kalyan Banerjee sustained a head injury on Sunday during a confrontation outside Chanditala Police Station in West Bengal's Hooghly district.
Banerjee had arrived at the police station along with a TMC delegation to submit a memorandum protesting the arrests of party workers following the recent Assembly elections. The situation turned tense when a group of protesters gathered outside the station, waving black flags and raising slogans against the TMC leadership.
According to Banerjee, he was struck on the head during the commotion and suffered a bleeding injury. Visuals from the scene showed the MP pressing a cloth against his head as supporters escorted him away.
Speaking to reporters, Banerjee alleged that BJP supporters were behind the attack and criticized the police for failing to prevent the incident. He claimed the assault occurred in full view of law enforcement personnel stationed at the venue.
The incident follows another high-profile confrontation involving TMC national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee, who was reportedly targeted with stones, eggs and shoes during a visit to Sonarpur on May 30 to meet victims of post-poll violence.
The latest clashes come amid heightened political tensions in West Bengal after the BJP's victory in the May 2026 Assembly elections, which ended the TMC's 15-year tenure in power. Both parties have accused each other of political violence and intimidation in the post-election period.
Police have deployed additional security personnel in the area and launched an investigation into the Chanditala incident. No official statement regarding arrests or identification of the attackers had been issued at the time of filing this report.
