How Rahul Gandhi Pulled Off a Surprise Protest Near PM's Residence, Catching Security Off Guard

Rahul Gandhi led a surprise protest near PM Modi's residence over the NEET-UG controversy, intensifying the political battle between Congress and the BJP.

India

New Delhi: In a dramatic political move, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi led a surprise protest near Prime Minister Narendra Modi's official residence on Tuesday, demanding the resignation of the Prime Minister, Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over the police action against students protesting alleged irregularities in the NEET-UG 2026 examination

. According to party sources, the protest was planned discreetly, with only a small group of senior leaders aware of the final strategy. Congress leaders assembled at different locations before converging near the Prime Minister's residence, leaving security agencies with little time to respond

. Rahul Gandhi was joined by Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and several senior Congress leaders as they raised slogans accusing the Centre of suppressing students' voices. Police intercepted the march and detained several leaders to prevent them from proceeding further.

The protest came a day after clashes between police and student demonstrators in Delhi. Rahul Gandhi, who had earlier met injured protesters at the hospital, said the government must answer for the police action and ensure justice for students.

The BJP criticised the Congress protest, calling it politically motivated, while the Congress maintained that the demonstration was intended to highlight concerns over the handling of the NEET issue and the treatment of student protesters

. The incident has added to the political heat surrounding the NEET controversy and is expected to remain a key issue during the ongoing Parliament session.
