Washington/New Delhi, July 10:
A sweeping U.S. federal indictment has placed the Lawrence Bishnoi criminal network at the center of an international investigation, alleging links to high-profile threats against Bollywood actor Salman Khan and claims surrounding the killing of Punjabi singer Sidhu Moose Wala.
According to U.S. prosecutors, members of the alleged crime syndicate used publicity surrounding these incidents to create fear, strengthen their influence and expand extortion operations across multiple countries. Investigators claim the network projected an image of power and intimidation to target victims in India and abroad.
The indictment also names jailed gangster Lawrence Bishnoi and alleged associate Goldy Brar in connection with the 2023 killing of Khalistani separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in Canada. U.S. authorities describe the organisation as a transnational criminal enterprise involved in contract killings, extortion and other organised crimes spanning North America, Europe and Asia.
Federal investigators allege that the gang operated through overseas associates and encrypted communication channels while maintaining a presence across several countries. The charges remain allegations and have not yet been proven in court.
