Kolkata, March 10: In a dramatic escalation of political tensions, Mamata Banerjee on Friday accused the Election Commission of India of wrongly declaring several living voters as deceased during the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. Addressing an indefinite sit-in protest at Esplanade East in Kolkata, the West Bengal Chief Minister put forward several individuals before the media, claiming they had been officially marked as “dead” in voter records despite being alive. Banerjee alleged that the move could disenfranchise thousands of voters and accused the poll body of acting under political pressure to benefit the Bharatiya Janata Party. “This is a serious attack on democracy. How can living citizens be declared dead in voter lists?” she questioned during the protest. The Trinamool Congress chief warned that her party would continue the agitation until the alleged irregularities in the electoral revision process are corrected. The protest site at Esplanade East witnessed a large gathering of party workers and supporters, turning the area into a political flashpoint. Meanwhile, officials from the Election Commission of India have yet to respond in detail to the allegations but sources indicated that the revision process follows strict verification procedures. The controversy has intensified the political battle in West Bengal ahead of upcoming elections, with opposition parties accusing the ruling government of politicising the electoral process while the Trinamool Congress claims voters’ rights are being undermined.
