New Delhi, Friday: Congress leader Pawan Khera has sharply criticised Defence Minister Rajnath Singh over his reported surprise at the Opposition’s demand for a change of regime, asserting that challenging the ruling government is a fundamental part of democratic politics.
Reacting to the controversy in a post on X, Khera said opposition parties across the world seek to replace governments through political and democratic processes. He argued that the BJP itself had campaigned to remove the Congress-led government before coming to power in 2014.
Invoking former President Pranab Mukherjee’s famous formulation on the role of the Opposition — “Expose, oppose and if possible, depose” — Khera questioned why the Opposition should be expected to refrain from challenging the ruling establishment.
“Did Rajnath ji expect the opposition to start a Bhakti Movement for Modi?” Khera asked, delivering a pointed political jibe at the BJP leadership.
His remarks have brought the debate over the Opposition’s role back into focus, with the Congress leader defending demands for political change as part of the democratic contest between the ruling party and its challengers.
The exchange highlights the continuing political confrontation between the Congress and the BJP over the legitimacy of calls for a change in government and the responsibilities of opposition parties in a parliamentary democracy.
