The satirical political platform “Cockroach Janata Party,” which went viral on social media within just five days by attracting massive engagement and lakhs of followers, has received a major setback after X suspended its official account. The move has now sparked a nationwide political and social debate over freedom of expression and digital censorship.
The page had rapidly gained popularity among young users by posting sarcastic content, memes, and sharp criticism targeting unemployment, governance failures, and mainstream politics. Its sudden suspension has triggered outrage online, with many calling it an attack on dissent and satire.
Reacting strongly to the controversy, senior Congress leader Shashi Tharoor reportedly criticised the action, saying that silencing platforms where youth express frustration and anger is dangerous for democracy. He argued that a healthy democracy should tolerate satire and criticism instead of suppressing them.
Opposition parties are also attempting to turn the issue into a larger political debate, questioning whether social media platforms are facing pressure to curb anti-establishment voices. Supporters of the Cockroach Janata Party, meanwhile, claimed that suspending one account would not stop the movement, with several backup pages already surfacing online.
The controversy has once again reignited concerns over free speech, online censorship, and the growing influence of social media platforms in shaping political discourse in India.
