WASHINGTON, July 5: US President Donald Trump has claimed that the United States possesses the military capability to eliminate Iran's top leadership and key military infrastructure in a single strike but is deliberately refraining from doing so to preserve the possibility of diplomatic negotiations.
Speaking about the ongoing tensions with Tehran, Trump asserted that Iran's leadership remains vulnerable but said military action is not being pursued because Washington still sees room for a negotiated settlement.
“They are all there. We can finish them in one go, but we will not do so because then there will be no one left for us to talk to. They are begging to make a deal,” Trump said.
The remarks reinforce Trump's recent hardline stance on Iran, with the US President repeatedly claiming that Tehran has been significantly weakened and is eager to negotiate with Washington. He has on several occasions argued that Iran should have entered talks much earlier instead of allowing tensions to escalate.
Trump's latest comments come against the backdrop of heightened friction between the two countries following US strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities and military infrastructure. While indirect diplomatic contacts have continued, efforts to revive meaningful negotiations have faced repeated obstacles.
Iranian officials have maintained that they remain open to diplomacy but have rejected what they describe as unilateral US demands. Tehran has consistently insisted that any future agreement must safeguard Iran's sovereignty, national interests and peaceful nuclear rights. The
White House has not issued any further clarification on Trump's latest statement, and Iranian authorities have not immediately responded to his remarks.
