Mumbai, May 18: A joyous wedding trip turned into a horrific tragedy after a vehicle carrying members of a wedding party crashed into a truck transporting cattle on the Mumbai–Ahmedabad National Highway in Maharashtra on Monday. According to preliminary reports, at least 12 people were killed and more than 25 others sustained serious injuries in the devastating accident.
The wedding vehicle, reportedly a mini-bus, was travelling at high speed when the driver is believed to have lost control and rammed into the rear of the cattle truck.
Police, fire personnel and emergency responders rushed to the spot and launched rescue operations. The injured were shifted to nearby hospitals, where several are said to be in critical condition.
The impact of the collision left the vehicle mangled, with passengers trapped inside. Rescue teams used cutting equipment to pull out the victims. Authorities have registered a case and initiated an investigation to determine the exact cause of the accident.
The tragedy caused massive traffic congestion on the busy highway for several hours before normal movement was restored.
Officials said the death toll may rise as some of the injured remain in critical condition.
