New Delhi: Senior Congress leader Leader of opposition Rahul Gandhi has launched a sharp attack on the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its NDA allies, alleging that the proposed delimitation exercise was a calculated move to weaken the political voice of southern and northeastern states. He described the move as a “direct assault on the federal structure and the idea of India.”
Gandhi claimed that states like Tamil Nadu, along with other southern and northeastern regions, were being unfairly targeted under the guise of constituency restructuring. According to him, the exercise would disproportionately benefit northern states while penalizing those that have successfully controlled population growth and contributed significantly to economic development.
He further stated that the opposition bloc, INDIA Alliance, had strongly resisted the move in Parliament of India and prevented what he termed a “dangerous precedent.” Gandhi emphasized that this was not merely a political issue but one that strikes at the core of India’s unity, diversity, and democratic balance.
Criticizing the NDA government, Gandhi accused it of engaging in “divisive and manipulative politics” aimed at consolidating power rather than strengthening democratic institutions. He warned that any attempt to undermine regional representation would face stiff opposition from parties committed to protecting the constitutional framework. Reaffirming his stance, Gandhi said the INDIA Alliance would continue to defend the identity, rights, and representation of all states, especially those at risk of losing their voice. “We will not allow the silencing of any region. India’s strength lies in its diversity, and we will fight to preserve it,” he asserted, signaling an intensified political battle ahead.
