Chennai/New Delhi, June 2:
In a major political development, former Tamil Nadu BJP chief K. Annamalai has reportedly resigned from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), bringing an end to days of speculation over his political future.
According to reports, Annamalai met BJP National President Nitin Nabin and National General Secretary B.L. Santhosh in New Delhi and submitted a detailed five-page resignation letter outlining his reasons for leaving the party.
Sources indicate that the former IPS officer expressed strong disagreement with the BJP leadership’s strategic decisions in Tamil Nadu, particularly its approach toward alliances with regional Dravidian parties. Annamalai is believed to have argued that the BJP should focus on building an independent political base in the state rather than relying on coalition partners.
The reported differences widened during the recent Assembly elections, where his views on candidate selection and seat-sharing were allegedly overlooked by the central leadership. His dissatisfaction reportedly grew after being assigned responsibility for only a limited number of constituencies.
Despite stepping away from the BJP, Annamalai is not expected to exit active politics. Political observers suggest he may contest upcoming by-elections either as an independent candidate or through a new political platform.
Reports also indicate that Annamalai is considering launching a regional political party within the next six to eight months. The proposed outfit is expected to promote a blend of Tamil identity and national outlook, positioning itself as a secular alternative in the state's political landscape.
Neither Annamalai nor the BJP leadership has officially commented on the reports at the time of publication.
