Bhopal, June 10: Congress leader Meenakshi Natarajan has strongly criticized the rejection of her Rajya Sabha nomination from Madhya Pradesh, alleging that the move is part of a broader attempt to weaken democratic institutions and manipulate the electoral process. Her nomination was rejected during scrutiny after objections were raised regarding disclosures in her affidavit.
Addressing the media, Natarajan said the controversy began when the BJP fielded a third candidate despite lacking the numerical strength required for an assured victory. She accused the ruling party of pursuing politics that undermines constitutional values and democratic norms, claiming that efforts were being made to influence the outcome of the Rajya Sabha election.
The Congress leader argued that the issue extends beyond a single election or candidate. According to her, the battle is about protecting democracy, federalism, and the integrity of India’s political system. She maintained that opposition parties are facing increasing challenges in safeguarding democratic institutions from what she described as attempts to establish a one-party political order.
The rejection of Natarajan’s nomination has intensified political tensions ahead of the June 18 Rajya Sabha elections in Madhya Pradesh. While the BJP maintains that the nomination was rejected due to non-disclosure of relevant information, the Congress has accused the ruling party of misusing institutional mechanisms for political advantage and has indicated it will pursue the matter with the Election Commission.
