Hyderabad/Husnabad, June 21:
Concerns over the voting rights of nearly 1.5 million Gulf workers and Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) from Telangana took center stage on Sunday as representatives of the Congress Party's Gulf wing met Telangana Transport and BC Welfare Minister Ponnam Prabhakar to discuss the issue.
During the meeting at the minister's camp office in Husnabad, Gulf Congress representative Sutari Satyanarayana Patel and Telangana NRI Advisory Committee Vice Chairman Manda Bheem Reddy highlighted concerns regarding the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and its potential impact on overseas voters.
The delegation urged the government to take proactive measures to ensure that the names of Gulf workers and NRIs remain on the voter list and that eligible overseas voters are able to complete registration and correction procedures without difficulty.
They also proposed large-scale awareness campaigns through online Zoom meetings and social media platforms to educate expatriate Telangana residents about voter registration and revision processes.
According to the representatives, Minister Ponnam Prabhakar responded positively to the suggestions and reaffirmed the government's commitment to protecting the democratic rights of overseas Telangana citizens. The delegation further invited the minister to visit Gulf countries and interact directly with Telangana expatriates and workers. The minister reportedly expressed willingness to undertake a Gulf tour to understand their concerns firsthand and strengthen engagement with the diaspora.
Participants in the meeting emphasized that overseas Telangana residents play a significant role in the state's development through remittances and investments, and their democratic participation should be safeguarded
