Bengaluru, June 21
: The Karnataka government is preparing to bring back student union elections in colleges and universities, with a decision expected later this month. The move is aimed at encouraging student participation in democratic processes and giving young people a greater voice in campus affairs.
Chief Minister D. K. Shivakumar has expressed support for the proposal, stating that student elections can help develop leadership skills and strengthen democratic values among youth.
Student elections have not been held in most Karnataka colleges for several decades. The government is now reviewing recommendations submitted by a committee tasked with examining the feasibility and framework for conducting the polls.
Officials are expected to introduce guidelines to ensure peaceful elections and prevent disruptions to academic activities. The government is also considering measures to maintain discipline and transparency throughout the process.
The proposal has generated discussion among students, educators, and political groups. Supporters believe elected student bodies can effectively represent student concerns, while others have raised questions about potential political influence on campuses.
If approved, the initiative will mark a significant shift in Karnataka's higher education environment and restore a platform for student representation in educational institutions.
