Pune | July 1:
Determined to avoid procedural mistakes that could weaken the prosecution, the Pune Rural Police are preparing what officials describe as a "foolproof" chargesheet in the murder of businessman Ketan Agarwal at Lohagad Fort.
According to top Maharashtra Police sources, investigators are seeking permission to conduct a polygraph (lie detector) test on Ketan Agarwal's fiancée and prime accused, Siya Goyal. Officials clarified that the move is not aimed at using the test results as courtroom evidence but at generating fresh investigative leads that can later be independently verified through digital or forensic evidence.
Police sources said the investigation has been shaped by lessons learned from the recent Meghalaya honeymoon murder case involving Sonam Raghuvanshi, where alleged procedural lapses during the arrest process contributed to bail being granted and later upheld by the high court. Investigators are keen to ensure that no technical shortcomings undermine their case against Siya Goyal.
Polygraph Seen as an Investigative Tool
Under Indian law, polygraph test results are not admissible as substantive evidence in court. However, investigators can use information revealed during questioning to uncover new leads. Police believe the examination could help identify previously unknown details about the alleged crime. For example, if Siya Goyal were to mention researching the height of the cliff at Lohagad Fort or reveal digital activity not yet known to investigators, officers could independently recover and verify that evidence through forensic analysis.
Investigators say the focus remains on building a strong, evidence-backed prosecution supported by digital records, forensic findings, and witness testimony rather than relying on the polygraph itself.
The chargesheet is expected to emphasize independently corroborated evidence to ensure the prosecution withstands legal scrutiny throughout the trial.
