PUNE, July 1:
Defence counsel for Siya Goyal, the main accused in the Ketan Agarwal murder case, has argued that any confession allegedly made while in police custody cannot be treated as admissible evidence during the trial.
Addressing the court, the advocate said the prosecution cannot rely solely on statements made in police custody to establish guilt. The defence maintained that such confessions have limited legal value and must be supported by independent evidence.
The lawyer also questioned the investigation, noting that the case was initially treated as an accidental death before police later registered a murder case. According to the defence, the prosecution must clearly explain the basis for the change and present credible material linking the accused to the alleged crime
. The defence further asserted that Siya Goyal has cooperated with investigators and will contest the prosecution's claims during the trial. It maintained that no adverse inference should be drawn merely from statements allegedly recorded during police custody.
Meanwhile, investigators continue to collect forensic, digital and circumstantial evidence as they probe the death of Pune businessman Ketan Agarwal at Lohagad Fort. Police have alleged that the killing was part of a planned conspiracy, while the accused have denied all allegations
. The case remains under investigation, and the court is expected to hear further submissions as the proceedings continue.
