A deadly overnight missile and drone attack by Russian forces on Ukraine’s key gas production infrastructure in the Poltava and Kharkiv regions has killed at least five people, including two rescue workers, Ukrainian authorities said Tuesday.
Officials reported that the strikes hit multiple gas facilities, sparking large fires and causing severe damage to critical energy infrastructure. Among the victims were three energy sector employees and two emergency responders who were caught in a second wave of attacks while carrying out rescue operations.
Several others were injured in the assault, with emergency services rushing to contain the fires and assist victims. Authorities described the attack as highly coordinated, involving both missiles and drones targeting strategic sites overnight.
The damage has led to a significant disruption in gas production, leaving thousands of consumers without supply. Energy officials warned that restoring services could take time due to the scale of destruction inflicted on the facilities.
Ukrainian leadership strongly condemned the strikes, highlighting the continued targeting of civilian and energy infrastructure amid the ongoing conflict. The incident adds to mounting concerns over the security of essential services as attacks on infrastructure intensify.
