Kyiv/Moscow, May 10: Hopes for a breakthrough in the Russia-Ukraine war suffered a major setback after both countries accused each other of violating a temporary ceasefire with fresh attacks over the weekend.
The short-term truce was expected to reduce violence and build momentum for peace negotiations. Instead, drone strikes, artillery shelling and cross-border attacks continued, highlighting the deep mistrust that still defines the conflict.
Ukrainian authorities said several regions came under Russian attack, resulting in civilian casualties and damage to homes and infrastructure. Emergency teams were deployed to affected areas as local officials reported injuries, including among children.
Russia, on the other hand, claimed Ukrainian forces launched multiple drone attacks and shelling operations. Moscow said its air defense units intercepted several drones and that its military responded to what it described as repeated violations
Despite the renewed hostilities, neither side has officially withdrawn from the ceasefire arrangement. Diplomatic efforts are continuing, with discussions on a large prisoner exchange still seen as a possible confidence-building measure.
The latest flare-up shows how fragile any peace initiative remains. While world powers continue to push for negotiations, events on the ground suggest that a lasting ceasefire is still far from becoming reality.
