Fire Brand TMC MP Mahua Moitra has launched a sharp attack on the Union government, accusing the BJP leadership of “double standards” after Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s appeal for public austerity measures.
In a strongly worded post on X, the Trinamool Congress MP questioned the credibility of the government’s call for citizens to reduce fuel consumption, cooking oil usage, fertiliser demand, and avoid foreign travel, calling it disconnected from ground realities.
Moitra alleged that BJP leaders have routinely relied on extensive helicopter usage, high-security convoys, and long cavalcades during election campaigns across states, while ordinary citizens are now being told to tighten their belts amid rising costs.
She also pointed to the Prime Minister’s upcoming five-nation foreign tour, arguing that such high-profile international travel stands in contrast to the government’s message of restraint and austerity being directed at the public. Narendra Modi and the BJP have not yet responded to her remarks.
The controversy comes at a time when concerns over fuel prices, inflationary pressures, and global energy instability—linked to ongoing West Asia tensions—continue to dominate the political debate, sharpening the opposition’s criticism of the government’s economic messaging.
