Hyderabad, September 11:

Telangana Police have detained a former Army Havildar suspected of masterminding the sensational theft of sophisticated weapons from the Madras Regiment armoury at Bolarum in Secunderabad Cantonment.

According to investigation sources, the former serviceman was familiar with the military facility and its layout. Police suspect that he exploited this knowledge to gain access to the armoury and remove the weapons.

The theft, which came to light on August 31, involved several firearms, including four AK-203 assault rifles, six 9mm pistols and an INSAS rifle, along with ammunition. Police have now recovered the missing weapons and ammunition, according to reports.

Investigators are probing the former Havildar’s alleged motive and his links, if any, with others involved in the incident. The case is being treated seriously because of the sensitive nature of the stolen military weapons.

The development comes after Telangana Police and Army authorities conducted an extensive investigation involving military personnel, security staff and other suspects. Military Intelligence was also involved in the probe.

The weapons theft from the high-security Army facility had raised major security concerns and prompted questions over possible insider involvement. Police are continuing to examine the circumstances surrounding the breach and the role of any other individuals.

The Telangana Police are expected to reveal further details after completing the investigation.
