Not a Congress Leader: Conman Posing as Rahul Gandhi’s Aide Held

Gaurav Kumar, an Amritsar-based accused, was arrested for allegedly impersonating Rahul Gandhi’s aide and cheating politicians by promising Congress tickets and senior-level access

Hyderabad, September 11: Gaurav Kumar, who allegedly posed as an aide of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and targeted politicians across multiple states, is not a Congress leader, according to police reports. The accused, a native of Amritsar, was arrested after allegedly using a fake identity to gain the trust of political leaders and aspiring candidates.

Police said Kumar allegedly impersonated Kanishk Singh, who had served as a private secretary to Rahul Gandhi, and used the identity to approach politicians seeking party tickets and political positions. He allegedly promised access to senior Congress leaders and demanded money in return.

According to police, the alleged fraud was not confined to one state. Investigators have linked Kumar to complaints and alleged financial transactions involving politicians in several states. Reports say he allegedly collected substantial sums by promising election tickets, political positions and influence within the Congress organisation.

The case has also triggered scrutiny of how the accused managed to obtain information about politicians and their political ambitions. Investigators are examining whether other people assisted him in the alleged operation and whether there are additional victims.

A case has also reportedly been linked to Hyderabad as part of the wider investigation. Police are continuing to verify the allegations, financial transactions and the identities of others who may have been involved.

Authorities have urged political workers and aspiring candidates to exercise caution and verify claims of direct access to senior leaders before making payments or sharing sensitive information.
