Farmers in Maharashtra are facing a severe price collapse in onion markets, with reports showing that in some trading yards, onions are being sold for as low as ₹1 per kg. The situation has created widespread distress among growers who say the current rates are far below production costs.
According to farmers, the sharp fall in prices is due to excess supply in the market and weak demand from both domestic and export buyers. Many growers are unable to recover even basic expenses like labour, transport, and fertilizers.
The Congress party has strongly criticised the state government, accusing it of failing to protect farmers from repeated agricultural price crashes. Opposition leaders claim that timely intervention, procurement support, or price stabilisation measures were not implemented effectively
. Farmer organisations in Maharashtra have also raised concerns, demanding urgent government action including compensation and a guaranteed minimum price mechanism to prevent further losses
The ongoing crisis has sparked political debate across the state, with calls growing for long-term reforms in agricultural marketing to protect onion farmers from recurring price volatility.
