Hosapete (Vijayanagara district): In a major relief to farmers across North Karnataka, Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar announced the successful completion of crest gate installation at the Tungabhadra Dam, ensuring long-term safety and water security.
Inspecting the works at the reservoir, Shivakumar said the government has fulfilled its promise of replacing aging infrastructure before the onset of the monsoon. A total of 33 new crest gates have been installed, replacing gates that were over 70 years old.
He emphasized that the modernization effort was carried out through continuous coordination between the state government and expert engineering teams. “We had assured farmers along the Tungabhadra basin that the work would be completed on time, and today we have delivered on that commitment,” he stated.
The Deputy CM highlighted that the upgraded crest gates will enhance the dam’s structural stability and operational efficiency, ensuring its safety for the next 50 to 60 years. This development is expected to significantly reduce risks during heavy inflows and improve water management.
The Tungabhadra reservoir serves as a crucial irrigation lifeline for farmers in Vijayanagara, Ballari, Koppal, and Raichur districts. With the completion of this project, the government aims to strengthen agricultural sustainability and address long-standing concerns of the farming community.
Shivakumar added that the initiative reflects the government’s commitment to safeguarding the interests of “annadatas” (farmers) and ensuring uninterrupted water supply for irrigation in the region.
