New Delhi/Gujarat, May 7:
Food Safety and Standards Authority of India has launched a major crackdown on the booming alkaline water market, seizing stock worth over ₹40 lakh from a Gujarat-based manufacturer during surprise inspections.
Officials reportedly found serious violations related to misleading health claims, improper labeling, and alleged breaches of food safety standards. The company had allegedly marketed its alkaline water with bold claims such as “health booster” and “medical benefits,” triggering regulatory action.
During the raid, authorities confiscated a massive stock of bottled alkaline water and issued notices to the manufacturing unit. Officials warned that strict action, including suspension or cancellation of licenses, could follow if violations are confirmed.
The crackdown comes amid increased nationwide monitoring of packaged drinking water and so-called “health beverages.” FSSAI has intensified checks on companies accused of misleading consumers in the name of wellness and immunity products.
The seizure has sparked fresh debate over the rapidly growing alkaline water industry and the authenticity of health claims being pushed in the market.
