New Delhi: The Centre has clarified that Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman received two separate invitations from India — one linked to the BRICS Summit and another for a bilateral visit.
According to the government, Rahman was invited to the BRICS outreach programme in his capacity as the current chair of BIMSTEC. Separately, India extended an invitation for him to undertake an official bilateral visit after he took charge as Bangladesh Prime Minister.
The clarification came amid questions over Bangladesh’s absence from the BRICS Summit hosted in New Delhi on September 12 and 13. Indian officials said invitations to leaders of regional organisations for BRICS outreach events are part of the summit’s established engagement process.
The Centre also stressed that the invitation for a bilateral visit is a separate matter and remains open. Dhaka has indicated that the visit could be considered when the circumstances are suitable for both sides.
The developments come as India and Bangladesh continue discussions on strengthening bilateral engagement and addressing issues of mutual interest.
